We see far too many parents these days willing to keep their child subdued with food treats in the hope that they will be still and quiet, needing less attention. This is lazy parenting and quite clear that the parents either don’t know or don’t care about the knock on effects that this behaviour brings about.
All it takes is to hear the catchphrase, as in the title of this article, or to hear the theme tune of an old television programme and immediately you are transported back to your childhood. Romper, bomper, stomper, boo was what the hostess of Romper Room used to say when she looked through her mirror to see all the children in television land. I can remember it as if it was yesterday.
Every day we can read in the press about compensation claims for all manner of injuries or affronts. It has led us to what has now been dubbed the ‘compensation culture’ where people hire injury lawyers to extract money from anyone and everyone in any case, instead of taking responsibility for their own behaviour. The ‘where there’s blame, there’s a claim’ phrase has been used to exhaustion because it seems, everyone can blame someone else for any slight mis-hap.
There I was, sitting in my mother’s lounge while she went off to make tea and suddenly someone hissed at me. Now, it’s not a big lounge, not the type where you could hide someone behind the curtains or anything like that, but there was a definite hissing nonetheless. I looked around me, I even looked under the sofa, but nothing. All was quiet and I began to think that I had imagined the whole thing. When she came back into the room, it happened again and she took no notice of it until she saw my face. She then pointed to an air freshener up on the wall.
As life insurance companies and doctors all well know, salt is a killer. It is one of those difficult killers because it is something we cannot avoid. We can die from too little just as we can die from too much and, depending on our health, it can be a fine balancing act. When it comes to the interior design of modern houses, fitted wardrobes have been an absolute godsend.
Looking back over the years, those great wooden boxes that passed as wardrobes from your grandmother’s era were actually as big as some new build flats that are on the market today. They may have looked lovely and been well built, lasting much longer than the flat packed versions of today, but they were cumbersome and would never fit in today’s homes. They were, it seems, designed to be put into one house and stay there forever, as you would know if you had ever tried to get one out again.
The health and safety experts have been at it again. The age old tradition of children participating in sack races at schools sports day, all in the name of that horrendous past time called fun, have been ruled out on the grounds that it is dangerous.
For those who thought that maybe surf clothing was for pansies who couldn’t cope with the elements, you may want to re-think that attitude after reading this article. It’s all very well surfing in the warm seas off of Florida or the Australian coast where the water is warm but just how extreme do you need it to be before you give in to the protection of surf clothing?

Ice skating is a popular sport these days. But it is by no means a new past time. The oldest ice skates ever found are said to be over 5,000 years old and they were made from the leg bones of either a horse or ox. They were secured to the feet with leather straps and a metal spike was used to propel the skater forward. Of course, these ice skates were used mainly for ease of transport across ice and less for entertainment although we can never be completely sure!
